Inspiring the Future

CSINearly 1.1 billion people around the world today live without reliable access to electricity. IEEE Smart Village is a volunteer-led global humanitarian program working around the world, everyday, to change and improve that staggering statistic.

Mission: IEEE Smart Village empowers off-grid communities through education and the creation of sustainable, affordable, locally owned entrepreneurial energy businesses.

Vision: To bring basic electrical and educational services to more than 50 million people by 2025.

As told by Chiemela Ukaegbu

IEEE Smart VillageMy name is Chiemela Ukaegbu. I am a primary 3 pupil of Community Primary School, Egbeke. As we did not have electricity before, I was not always able to do my class homework at night or read my book very well at night because of the smoke from candles/ kerosene lamps. Also I was always scared whenever my parents send me on errands outside the house at night for fear of snakes. Most painful was that I had to wait until every full moon to play outside with my peers at night since there was no light. But with the new solar light, I am able to do all of the above and I am very happy. I say a big thank you to engineer (doesn’t know my name as I am generally being referred to as “engineer” by the community) and his friends for bringing this solar light to us.
