Grants Awarded in 2019

Your donations make it possible to fund innovative projects of interest to IEEE. Each year, the IEEE Foundation receives many more requests to its Grants Program than it is able to support. In 2019, the IEEE Foundation Grants Committee identified six worthy projects, conducted all around the world, and awarded a total of US$131,049 in grants.

In 2019, the IEEE Foundation awarded grants to IEEE organizational units for projects that addressed the theme: To Raise Awareness and Understanding of Sustainable Engineering.

Grants are awarded through the IEEE Foundation Fund and the IEEE Life Members Fund.

IEEE Foundation Fund (FF)

SET-Souq ETaqa (Energy Info Market)

A US$32,079 grant was awarded to the IEEE Lebanon Section's Life Member Affinity Group in IEEE Region 8 (Africa, Europe, Middle East) to support an awareness campaign to education the general public on sustainable green energy solutions to solve the perpetual power deficit in Lebanon.

IEEE Empower a Billion Lives: Global Finals Energy Access Workshop

The IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) was awarded a US$15,000 grant to host an Energy Access Workshop to be held in conjunction with the Empower a Billion Lives (EBL) Global Final Awards. EBL is one of the priority initiatives in the IEEE Foundation's "Realize the Full Potential of IEEE" campaign.

Supercomputers: Drivers of Sustainability Exhibit

The IEEE Los Alamos & Northern New Mexico (LANNM) Section in IEEE Region 6 (Western U.S.) received a grant of US$28,500 to update the existing Supercomputing exhibit at the Bradbury Science Museum (BSM) of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).  The updates will expand on the history and importance of supercomputing in the sciences and engineering and will introduce visitors to the many ways in which supercomputer simulations not only explore, design, and enhance the modern world, but also create a more sustainable future.

Engineering Resilience to Drough
t and Wildfires

The IEEE Buenaventura Section in IEEE Region 6 (Western U.S.) received a US$17,740 grant for their project that aims to promote sustainable engineering as an enabler for creating a drought and wildfire resilient community. This will be accomplished through public talks discussing the natural equilibrium between habitat-agriculture-forest in Ventura County, STEM hands-on engineering workshops and Entrepreneurship Education workshops.

IEEE Region 8 Entrepreneurship Initiative - Advance Technology for Humanity: Sustainable Engineering

A US$28,000 was awarded to IEEE Region 8 Young Professionals (Africa, Europe, Middle East) to establish a Region-wide program consisting of a technical project competition focused on sustainable engineering and a mentorship program for the teams selected to participate.

Awareness, Producing of Sustainable Electricity Bio-Gas

The IEEE Student Branch from UCET, The Islamia University of Bahawalpur, in Region 10 (Asia and Pacific) was awarded US$10,000 to support an initiative to educate the public about Sustainable Electricity through Bio-Gas. The program will consist of multiple workshops, panel discussions, public awareness sessions and the creation of two models to illustrate the potential benefits.
