Fueling the Next Generation of Power & Energy Engineers
Eighty-two students from 58 universities across USA and Canada were selected by the IEEE PES Scholarship Plus Initiative (PES S+ ) as the 2023-24 class IEEE PES Scholars. PES S+ recognizes high-achieving undergraduate students majoring in electrical engineering who have strong GPAs, distinctive extracurricular commitments and a desire to work in the power & energy sector. These IEEE PES Scholars receive a financial award, one year of IEEE PES Student membership and the opportunity to be mentored by leading professionals in the sector.
This year’s group of Scholars brings the total number of scholarships awarded since inception in 2011 to an impressive 2,038. Over 60% of past Scholars are now working full time in the Power and Energy sector at companies like Burns & McDonnell, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, S&C Electric Company, Black and Veatch, and Eaton Corporation.
The success and impact of PES S+ depends upon the generous support of donors like the Hoveidia Family Foundation, G&W Electric, the Sahazian family, Jo-Ann and John McDonald and many, many others.
The 2024-25 application cycle will open on 1 March and close on 30 June. We invite you to encourage students to apply.
Meet 2023-24 PES Scholars
The 2023-24 class of PES Scholars is full of bright and passionate students who are already making an impact on the power and energy industry. Here’s what they have to say about the scholarship:
Karla Amaya
California Polytechnic State University Pomona
2023/24 Anne-Marie Sahazizian Scholar
“This scholarship has assisted me greatly with cost of living and education financial costs including tuition. Overall, it relieved me from financial stress for my academic year. I highly encourage students to apply for the PES scholarship, especially those experiencing financial hardships. IEEE offers students great opportunities to succeed.”
Megan Dion
Stevens Institute of Technology
2022/23 & 2023/24 Anne-Marie Sahazizian Scholar
“I am honored to be selected as a recipient of the PES Scholarship Plus along with such a successful group of young electrical engineers. The most helpful aspect of the scholarship is the IEEE membership, which allows me to network with other electrical engineers in the power industry. Having the opportunity to create lasting connections with influential individuals in the field is of utmost importance to me.”
Olivia Egbert
University of Colorado Boulder
2022/23 & 2023/24 Hoveida Family Foundation Scholar
“This scholarship not only helped me financially but exposed me to an entire network of professionals that I wouldn’t have met otherwise. Through the mentorship piece of the scholarship, I had the opportunity to regularly meet with an engineer in an industry I’m interested in and learn about day-to-day life working for a fast-paced tech start-up. His guidance and expertise were invaluable, and I’m grateful for the Scholarship Plus which made it possible!”
Caleb Hardy
Iowa State University
2022/23 & 2023/24 Hoveida Family Foundation Scholar
“The IEEE Scholarship Plus Initiative has helped me not only by providing financial assistance for college but also by allowing me the opportunity to connect with other IEEE members. The application process was long and in-depth, but the questions asked aren’t just an application, they really made me think about the answers and why I want to pursue a career in power.”
Kalen Meyer
South Dakota State University
2022/23 & 2023/24 G&W Scholar
“This scholarship has been very beneficial to me financially. College is expensive, and anything helps so I am very appreciative for the generosity of the donors to help make this scholarship possible. This scholarship has also helped with paying for an IEEE membership which allows me to get more involved in the electrical engineering field on campus which gets me more involved.”
Allison Pham
University of Texas at Dallas
2022/23 & 2023/24 Hoveida Family Foundation Scholar
“The PES Plus Scholarship has been instrumental in my personal and academic growth as I pursue a degree in electrical engineering with a specialization in Renewable Energies. The mentorship program offered by PES has played a pivotal role in helping me achieve my goals and excel in the field by continually motivating me to pursue my studies and passion projects, particularly in high-powered research. This scholarship presents an excellent opportunity for students interested in a career in the power industry, as it provides valuable connections that can aid in their industry growth and development.”
