Elite Goldsmith Legacy League and Heritage Circle Donors Honored

Members of both the Heritage Circle and the Goldsmith Legacy League were recognized with a binder and commemorative coin at the start of the IEEE Foundation Board Meeting in Orlando, FL, US.

In a 15 February ceremony, IEEE Foundation Board of Directors President John Treichler presented some of our most elite donors, who have taken investment in human potential to the next level, with well-deserved recognition. President Treichler opened the ceremony by stating that “philanthropy is an investment in human potential. And when your philanthropic investment supports the IEEE and the IEEE Foundation, you know you’re investing in the most vital elements of that potential --equity and innovation tied intrinsically with the advancement of technology.”

Sharing Capital to Serve Humanity

More than 50 years ago, “a professor from the University of Houston invited me to an IEEE meeting and the rest was history,” said Scott Atkinson. “Almost immediately, I began volunteering in my IEEE Communications Society Chapter and the IEEE Houston Section. Those events led me to continue volunteering and gradually take on additional roles with conferences at the Society level,” said Scott, who was recently nominated to be the 2020 Life Members Committee Chair. “Needless to say, the IEEE has been my professional association and a very important part of my career and I can credit my success directly to my membership.”

Sharing IEEE History with Open Access

Preserving and promoting the history of technology, the profession and IEEE is a privilege, duty and calling the IEEE History Center takes very seriously. Through its many targeted programs, the Center collects and disseminates information and resources that exemplify the impact and influence of technology and its relationship, both past and present, to society. Each month one of the Ph.D. historians on staff at the IEEE History Center curates “Scanning Our Past” a special feature published in the subscription based journal Proceedings of the IEEE. These features explore the history of technology and the people associated with it from a social, political, economic, or culture context and are among the most read articles produced by IEEE.
