Realize the Full Potential of IEEE
IEEE Foundation is leading a special campaign across IEEE’s expansive network to raise awareness, forge partnerships, and fund Priority Initiatives.
Foundation Board Member Addresses the Challenge of Open Access

One of the objectives of the IEEE Foundation is, where possible, to help convert challenges facing IEEE into opportunities. A very topical challenge today involves the changing nature of publications. The challenge exists in how current day magazines, periodicals, journals, etc., are distributed by publishers, and accessed by readers. This logistical and financial conundrum has presented organizations, including IEEE, with challenges that alter a business model that has been in existence for decades.

As a result, the concept of Open Access is becoming more prevalent for the publishing world, and for IEEE. This concept is the mechanism via which publishers distribute information online, free of charge. Obviously such a concept has repercussions throughout the publishing world.

Thanks to one of our IEEE Foundation Board members, L. Dennis Shapiro, the IEEE Foundation is helping IEEE address this issue in at least one instance.

The Club’s membership reads like a Who’s Who: 3 Presidents, 2 Vice Presidents, a dozen Supreme Court justices, 36 Nobel Prize winners, 61 Pulitzer Prize winners and 55 recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Included in that distinguished roster is IEEE Life Fellow, Robert Briskman, Chief Technical Officer and Executive Vice President, Engineering of Sirius Satellite Radio since its founding in 1991.

Leadership and Benevolence Enables IEEE-HKN

When Hulya Kirkici needed to find a worthy organization to donate the proceeds of a non-profit called the Power Modulator Conference, she knew in her heart that it had to be IEEE. She approached the IEEE Foundation to collaborate on how to proceed. We explored the original purpose of the Power Modulator Conference and the wide array of IEEE social good programs. The goal was to identify a program that would recognize technical achievement of students within IEEE Region 3.
