June 2018 Campaign Update
Realize the Full Potential of IEEE
IEEE Foundation is leading a special campaign across IEEE’s expansive network to raise awareness, forge partnerships, and fund Priority Initiatives.
Celebrating the Work and Life of Claude Elwood Shannon

In 2014 IEEE Information Theory Society President, Michelle Effros, knew that something had to be done. The man who coined the very phrase, Information Theory, had largely been forgotten. Given his importance, and the growing impact that his work was having on society at large, she led the IEEE Information Theory Society on a quest to use the Centennial of Claude Shannon’s birth to right this injustice.

19 June was the World Premiere of the finished product. The Bit Player was screened to a full house on the big screen at the IEEE Information Theory Society’s meeting in Vail, CO, US. The film was met with enthusiastic acclaim. Following the screening attendees were treated to a Q&A with the film’s director and star.

IEEE VIPs Walked the Red Carpet for Power to the People

IEEE VIPs walked the red carpet to the screening event of Power to the People, A National Geographic BREAKTHROUGH documentary produced by Ron Howard, featuring IEEE Smart Village and hosted by IEEE Foundation. The path was bordered by a dazzling display of photographs taken by award-winning photo journalist Paula Bronstein.

The screening was met enthusiastically and for some, even emotionally. Ann Walz, spouse of IEEE Division V Director John W. Walz said, “I had no idea of the impact of work the Foundation supported and how extraordinary the journey was for those IEEE volunteers. Smart Village is an amazing program and Jean is such a captivating speaker that I felt as though I were there too.”

Perhaps no one understands and appreciates the heart and soul of the IEEE mission and the importance of this landmark campaign more than Jerry Suran, who served as the 1979 IEEE President and also holds the esteemed title of the oldest living IEEE president.
