On January 10th, IEEE leaders took part in a Global Leaders Series (GLS) event in the heart of Silicon Valley, where some of the world’s most ground-breaking innovations have been conceived and developed. Gathering at the Elizabeth F. Gamble Home & Gardens in Palo Alto, CA (USA), the group celebrated IEEE member accomplishments, discussed and garnered support for a number of important initiatives underway by the IEEE Foundation and embraced a landmark, soon-to-be announced philanthropic campaign which will usher in a new day in IEEE Foundation’s 45-year history.

A Commitment to Collaboration
IEEE Foundation Executive Director Karen Galuchie and IEEE Foundation President Dr. John Treichler began the evening by welcoming guests and introducing the event. Featured presenter Dr. John Cioffi, inventor and pioneer of digital subscriber line (DSL) technology who has come to be considered “the father of DSL,” discussed highlights of his career, the impacts of his IEEE membership, and his journey and which led him to academic and professional success.

Professor Thomas Kailath, celebrated scientist, author and 2014 recipient of a National Medal of Science, along with his former student, Professor Victor Lawrence, a pioneer of digital signal processing and data communications, followed Dr. Cioffi with compelling tributes to the IEEE Smart Village (ISV). ISV brings electrical power, access to education and participation in the global economy to more than 50,000 people in nearly three dozen remote, energy-deprived communities around the globe. Professor Kailath and his wife, Dr. Anu Luther, recently made a leadership commitment to ISV which will underwrite the cost of sponsoring an entire village in India. IEEE thanks them for this magnanimous gesture, which is a source of inspiration for the IEEE Foundation, its Board, and its staff members alike.

Dr. Treichler concluded the memorable evening by sharing the exciting news that the IEEE Foundation has been immersed in the quiet phase of a major philanthropic fundraising campaign. Having successfully achieved 40% of its targeted goal, the campaign is now poised to be announced to the public. Details about this landmark campaign will be shared in a formal announcement in February!

This GLS event is part of a series of professional gatherings held around the world (soon to take place in such locations as India and Singapore) which are designed to gather esteemed IEEE leaders together in a celebration of fellowship and support for global IEEE initiatives.
