Realize Your Impact in 2020
A special message of gratitude from John Triechler – IEEE Foundation President

It makes us all proud to recall the ways we served as the IEEE philanthropic partner during 2020 and to enter 2021 with a sense of accomplishment and excitement for what is yet to come. I want to reflect on just a few of our 2020 accomplishments and thank you for the role you played in supporting IEEE programs.

Foremost, I’m pleased to report that we achieved the ambitious US$30 million goal of the Realize the Full Potential of IEEE Campaign. In fact, we surpassed the goal and raised $32 million! I’m even happier to report the depth of the philanthropic support the campaign garnered – from individual IEEE members, IEEE members working through their organizational units, companies who rely on our members’ talents, and other individuals who see the educational and humanitarian value in the work our members are doing. Together, we can applaud our campaign success in the upcoming months and celebrate our impact in the years ahead.

In addition to realizing the success of IEEE’s first philanthropic campaign, in 2020 we:

  • Hosted a special screening of The Bit Player and launched a virtual events series holding three events welcoming thousands of participants
  • Added 28 new donors to the IEEE Heritage Circle
  • Celebrated #GivingTuesday and received gifts from 300+ donors totalling $113K (a 12% increase over 2019)
  • Launched the COVID-19 Response Fund awarding $35,329 in funding to six IEEE programs providing support throughout the pandemic
  • Shared our impacts through the production and distribution of two news packed IEEE Foundation Focus newsletters, 12 issues of the monthly Campaign Communication, the 2019 Annual Report, and our Four Pillars video (long and short)
  • Welcomed three new Directors: Alex Acero, Francisco Martinez and John McDonald and said thank you and farewell to Roger Fujii, Jackie Peer and Vince Poor as their terms came to a close.
Our donors and IEEE program partners truly do bring the promise of technology and the knowledge to use it to communities and individuals around the world. The COVID-19 pandemic presented unique challenges but IEEE members and staff adapted and stayed connected. We thank you and invite you to learn more about how the philanthropic investment of your time, talent and treasure during 2020 helped the IEEE Foundation improve lives around the globe by reading the four articles that follow - Illuminate, Educate, Engage and Energize.
Illuminate - the possibilities of technology by using it to address global challenges

Technology is a propelling force that makes it possible to take action. It allows us to ask previously unimaginable questions and find solutions to unsolved problems. Donor supported programs that “Illuminate” positively impact lives globally.

Educate – the next generation of innovators and engineers

The future of technology depends upon the nourishment of brilliant minds, the creation of opportunities to dream, and the cultivation of a generation of socially responsible technology professionals. Your donations support the next generation of innovators through IEEE scholarships, travel grants, science kits and other IEEE programs.

Engage – a wider audience in appreciating the value and importance of engineering and technology

Donor supported programs that “Engage” strive to preserve and promote the legacy of electrical engineering and computing. Preserving our history enables us to better understand today and improve tomorrow.

Energize – innovation by celebrating technological excellence

Technological innovation pushes the boundaries of thinking, breaks new ground and improves lives. Your support helps “Energize,” encourage and celebrate technological achievements and academic excellence.
