Vivian Carr Leaves A Legacy Gift to IEEE

Vivian Carr was an IEEE member for more than fifty years when she passed away on 29 April 2018. She was known for her pioneering spirit and successfully breaking the glass ceiling. Throughout her distinguished career at AT&T and Bell Labs, she received numerous awards and generously served the engineering community by volunteering her time and talent to IEEE rising through the ranks to lead both the IEEE New York Section and IEEE Engineering Management Society (now known as the IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Society). Mel Olken, IEEE Life Fellow and long-time IEEE volunteer, described her as, “one of those unforgettable people that one rarely comes across. She was a no-nonsense lady who did not suffer fools gladly and made no bones about her opinions.”

Vivian generously lifted IEEE to the status of family when she included an unrestricted bequest to the IEEE Foundation in her will. “Vivian’s last gift to IEEE was unexpected and noteworthy much like the lady who bequeathed it. Her philanthropic investment provides the vital resources the IEEE Foundation needs to further the scientific and educational purposes of IEEE,” said Karen Galuchie, IEEE Foundation Executive Director. To acknowledge her generosity, Vivian’s name will be added to the roster of the IEEE Goldsmith Legacy League, our legacy donor recognition group where donors are forever generous.
