Leveraging Donor Dollars

IIEEE Smart Village (ISV) co-located its annual gathering of in-country project developers with the PES/IAS Power Africa Conference in Abjua, Nigeria this August. A delegation of 50+ from across Africa and around the globe joined in a week-long series of sessions, workshops, tutorials and technical tours. In part due to the generous support of generous donors to the IEEE Foundation Realize the Full Potential of IEEE Campaign.

By competitive application, a cross section of ISV’s African, Indian, SE Asia and Latin American funded project developers eagerly accepted modest partial travel support to learn from each other, experts in the field and ISV leadership. The opportunity to network, share lessons learned, and hear presentations from representatives from the World Bank, US Africa Development Fund, and like-minded local micro-utility developers is instrumental to their success. ISV’s kick-start funding to our “energy entrepreneurs” provides the initial nurturing to establish rural community electrification, education and enterprise development programs. Going to scale requires funding beyond that provided by IEEE. It’s at gatherings like this that ISV’s project developers learn of critical next-step funding, access to hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars, allowing them to expand from the ISV supported pilot projects to regional programs introducing tens if not hundreds of community power plans, literacy & vocational training, and small-business stimulating opportunities.

Through IEEE’s support of such “leveraging opportunities” that programs such as Smart Village grow and expand beyond that first installation and move toward the dream of fulfilling the needs of thousands of community members. Donor support not only incubates successful energy kiosks and community knowledge centers, it also provides critical opportunities for interactive dialogue between the boots-on-the ground project managers through virtual and face-to-face conferences, exposure to 3rd party revenue sources, access to the latest technologies, and the broad experiential knowledge base of their peers.
