From Blackboard to Digital Board

The quality of education in government schools in India is sub-standard due to crumbling infrastructure and lack of qualified teachers.

Timken, an American Engineering firm, values technology’s role in improving lives and saw an alignment of social and educational interests with IEEE. Thus, a partnership was born to work to improve learning outcomes in India. Timken pledged INR 70 Lacs (US$100,000) to Global IEEE for an E-Learning Project under the direction of EPICS in IEEE.

Timken’s generosity is funding the implementation of E-learning modules in 50 schools in Jharkhand, one of the poorest states of India. The objective of the project is accelerating digital learning for all ages with a goal of increasing personal learning options for students and expanding instructional opportunities for teachers and instructors.

Through the project, 50 classrooms receive Interactive Smart Boards that make the teaching and learning process exciting and interesting. The smart board technology creates an audio-visual environment that facilitates students to understand concepts quickly, easily and to retain its impact for a longer period. In addition, the smart boards are accompanied with math and science curriculum in local language based on the state syllabus. The equipment has built-in Wi-Fi enabling the streaming of educational videos and includes an instructional video that trains the teachers on how to use the equipment.

The project, an excellent example of how IEEE is forging global partnerships and impacting communities world-wide, will be assessed for efficacy on an ongoing basis. EPICS in IEEE is a donor supported initiative and is able to expand and enhance its offerings in the US and world-wide thanks to your support of the Realize the Full Potential of IEEE Campaign.
