2019 - 2020 PES Scholars Announced

The IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) Scholarship Plus Initiative announced that 135 high-achieving undergraduate electrical engineering students were recognized as 2019-2020 PES Scholars. These students represent 78 universities across the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, and were selected from 326 applicants. Rick Pieper, Vice President – Large Projects, MYR Transmission Services and Chair of the IEEE PES Scholarship Plus Initiative said, "The students will receive a financial award, one year of IEEE PES student membership and have the opportunity to be mentored by leading professionals in the power and energy industry. We are excited as they begin to explore a career path that ensures the electric grid is maintained & transformed to accommodate society's changing needs."

Two industry leaders whose commitment began with the Initiative’s inception are Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories and S&C Foundation, the philanthropic entity of the S&C Electric Company.

Through the generous financial support of Edmund & Beatriz Schweitzer and the employee-owners of Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. (SEL) thirteen students annually are recognized as an IEEE PES Schweitzer Meritorious Scholar. Only individuals selected as a 2019‐2020 recipient of the IEEE PES Scholarship Plus Initiative are eligible to be considered for this recognition.

The IEEE PES Scholarship Plus John W. Estey Outstanding Scholar Award is distributed annually to the top PES Scholars in each of the six IEEE U.S. regions and Canada. In Regions 1-6, this award is made possible by the support of the S&C Foundation and is named after John W. Estey, past Chief Executive Officer of S&C Electric Company. Mr. Estey’s individual contribution enabled its expansion to Region 7. There are seven 2019-2020 IEEE PES John W. Estey Outstanding Scholars.

Prominent multi-year donors to the Initiative include G&W Electric Company, Burns & McDonnell, and ShivKrupa. Additional corporate donors include: American Transmission Company, Black & Veatch, Dominion, Edison International, ISO New England, MYR Group, OMICRON, Sacramento Municipal Utility District, Sargent & Lundy, SDGE, Southern Company, Ulteig and UC Synergetic/PIKE. All of these companies are deeply committed to solving the talent development issues facing power and energy today and helping future engineers find their path.

Since 2011, US$3.8 million has been awarded in scholarships to almost 1,000 students attending more than 175 universities across the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico.
